@ Founder & CEO at Digital Currency Group
Barry Silbert is the Founder & CEO of Digital Currency Group (DCG), which builds and supports bitcoin and blockchain companies through its insights, network, and access to capital. Starting in 2012, Barry was introduced to bitcoin and became fascinated by the myriad of disruptive opportunities to build a better financial system. Barry became one of the first and most active investors in the bitcoin space, providing seed funding for Coinbase, Ripple, BitPay, and a number of other companies who have gone on to define the industry. Building off this impressive portfolio of angel investments, Barry also created the Bitcoin Investment Trust, the first publicly-quoted security (symbol: GBTC) that is solely invested in and deriving its value from the price of bitcoin. Today, DCG is comprised of Grayscale Investments, Genesis Trading, CoinDesk, and a portfolio of over 60 investments in 20 countries.
Prior to founding Digital Currency Group, Barry founded SecondMarket, a platform that enables private companies and investment funds to more efficiently raise capital and provide liquidity to their stakeholders, which was sold to Nasdaq in 2015. Prior to founding SecondMarket in 2004, Barry was an investment banker at Houlihan Lokey and graduated with honors from the Goizueta Business School of Emory University. Barry has received several honors including being named Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young and Crain’s, and being selected to Fortune’s prestigious “40 Under 40” list.
